Painting Prep

Perfect walls and ceilings. Personally, I don't think they exist.

Patching. Priming. Sanding. Caulking. Painting prep.

My latest project is an older home in one of Massachusetts's beautiful, historic towns. We are lavishing all the above, plus loving care and lots of elbow grease on its ceilings and walls before we brush on any paint.

Glen patching and prepping in the kitchen. We capped off and patched that old clock outlet to Glen's right.  And to all you hawkeyes out there, yes, a sponge painted ceiling. But not for long. At this point all the trim has been caulked and primed.

Here's Dan, the Dan of Dan Moynihan Painting and Wallpapering. Camera shy.
The third member of our paint crew, Falcon, is around the corner.
Here are the new kitchen colors:

Silverpointe, SW 7653, SherwinWilliams, for the upper part of the wall, upper cabinets, and hallway.

Mysterious Mauve, SW 6262, SherwinWilliams, for the space under the chair rail and the base cabinets. It is more toned down and subtle than the original aubergine. Works beautifully with the kitchen flooring.
The dining room before.
Before. The dining room ceiling and wall sustained some water damage.

During. Here's the same corner after the repair.
Still needs more prep, primer and "sizing" applied to the walls before the paper is hung.
I took off the chair rail, it was lower than the rail in the kitchen, a different style and was generally making me crazy.
But that sort of thing is typical in an older New England home. Technically we call it "quirky".
Decided not to replace the rail so more wallpaper is displayed. It isn't a particularly high ceiling.

Do you enjoy painting? Do it yourself? Have it done for you? Is the hardest part picking color?

  1. Those are the cleanest painters I have ever seen. At first glance I thought Glen was ultra-tall in a low-ceiling kitchen...then realized he was on a stepladder. I like the new kitchen colors. Can't wait to see the "after" shots.

  2. Picking colors is very difficult for me. I have a hard time visualizing the whole room with the paint sample chip.
