Scarborough, Maine

At this time every August everyone starts talking and writing about Autumn. We have an entire month of Summer ahead of us!

Day trips are a good way to enjoy late Summer. Every geography has its day trips. Scarborough, Maine is within our drivable sphere.

We were up in Scarborough in June. Maine is beautiful all year round, including late Summer, but June's flowers are hard to beat. This field of lupines was surreal.

Wild Roses in full bloom lined the beach paths.

Scarborough boasts great sand beaches as well as Prouts Neck, the famed location of Winslow Homer's studio. Homer's studio is still there although I missed it as we hiked the Prouts Neck Cliff Walk. It is easiest to access the walk from the Scarborough Beach State Park.

Prouts Neck has the best of both worlds.

Nature lovers are refreshed and renewed by the craggy Atlantic coast and wild flowers.

Rosa Rugosa is rugged. It grows right out of the rocks in the salty air.

Wind blown Juniper on the South side of Prouts Neck.

Sweet Forget-Me-Nots.

Buttercups.

Those of us whose neck cranes at the mere suggestion of architecture are rewarded with interesting cottages dotting the coast.

A closer look at the behemoth on the right owned by a sports management figure currently reviled by indigenous sports enthusiasts.

We are always hungry after a good hike.

Lunch is in order. Our daughter and her beau wanted to try Bite Into Maine, a food truck parked in Fort Williams Park. The Town of Cape Elizabeth owns and runs Fort Williams Park. It is a short ride up the coast from Scarborough to the world's most photographed light house and the best lobster roll outside of Cape Cod.

Fort Williams also has a cliff walk. The Portland Head Light.

My husband was not familiar with the truck concept and peppered our daughter with a barrage of statement questions, i.e., "....FOOD FROM A TRUCK!?!?!?.....what kind of place is it.....who reviewed it.....do you know them....where do you sit?", etc., etc.

Maybe he envisioned crates of cabbage falling off the back of a semi. Sometimes it is better not to delve deeper into the musings of others and just enjoy the drive. Also, daughter is 29 and more than capable of defending her restaurant choices.

I don't take food pictures because I worry that my camera will become encrusted with lobster or I'll get the lens greasy as a result of my french fry problem. Real foodies do it better anyway. This is exactly what Bite Into Maine's lobster roll looks like.

Is it true lobster is sweeter in August?

Good to know they did not give the Globe an extra claw. The fries are very good and the cucumber corn salad includes blueberries (it's Maine). Ginger beer and blueberry soda are locally brewed.

There is finite number of picnic tables. Pack a blanket in case you have to sit on the grass.

Then of course you'll be hungry for dinner. The Lobster Shack at Two Lights, also in Cape Elizabeth. There is indoor seating but there are plenty of picnic tables perched on the cliff. Dogs are welcome outside.

Another light house and spectacular views to take in while your lobsters and clams are being prepared. I took these just as the sun was starting to drop lower in the sky.

I can almost hear the waves crashing on the rocks.

What is your favorite day trip?

Have a great weekend.

Maine is beautiful. The coastline is like none other. The lupine are spectacular this year. Your photos are spectacular. Food trucks are rather new to me but so far my experience has been very good. I still enjoy the traditional table and chairs to relax and enjoy a nice meal with good atmosphere.
