Miles Redd, King of Color

If Mario Buatta is the Prince of Chintz, then Miles Redd is the King of Color.

For several years I've admired Mr. Redd's magical transformation of this industrial space into a one bedroom flat. Housed in a former printing factory in New York's West Village, Mr. Redd thought "It looked like a rec room in a dorm," when he first saw it.

With the masterful use of color, estate sale and auction finds, and a talented painter, Mr. Redd's creation will, in the years to come, be a design icon as reverently referred to as Nancy Lancaster's Yellow Room and Albert Hadley's library for Brooke Astor are today. Look closely at the floor, it isn't marble, it's paint.

With that heady prediction out of the way, I ran across this modular area rug, Heavy Petal, from FLOR.

What an easy and inexpensive alternative to having your floors faux marbelized, which is never an option for renters or the faint of heart. A white table rather than black is a lighter touch with this rug. These glossy black chairs are available in plenty of other colors that will take the Redd look to the table.

Or white chairs.

Would you do this much color?
