2013 Color of the year, take your pick

Finally, the Big 3 have spoken.

Today, Pantone crowned Emerald the "it" color for 2013.

Emerald works for me, especially since my copper and malachite kick. I covet this slice of malachite.

A few weeks back SherwinWilliams announced it was going retro with Aloe, SW6464, as its 2013 color of the year.

Aloe is a perfectly fine color and it will find its champions. Personally, I like my colors fresher, cleaner, more uplifting. But that doesn't mean I can't work with Aloe. Calmer colors like Aloe may be just the thing if you have a high pressure job and home is your haven to de-stress.

Back in August, early bird Benjamin Moore's pick for 2013 was Lemon Sorbet.

Lemon Sorbet, BM color 2019-60

No surprise here, I'm a huge fan of yellow. I love yellow. Yellow and emerald, now that's a lovely combination. Yellow and white. Yellow and blue. The dining room at Monticello. My foyer. I could go on.

Are you asking yourself, "what does it all mean?" Well, everything and nothing.

If you loved these colors before, you will be ecstatic to see them featured month after month in the shelter mags over the next year. Maybe it will give you the courage to go forward with a new decorating project.

If you didn't like them before their coronation, you probably won't after.

You might, as I did with Tangerine Tango (Pantone's 2012 color), learn to look at color more dispassionately. Not saying you'll fall in love with a color you currently absolutely abhor. Seeing it month after month in the magazines used in a variety of ways might give you a different perspective. Or not.

What do you think of these colors?

  1. Love that tangerine. Not so fond of the yellow or green.

  2. The malachite is just my cup of green tea. SW's Aloe is dull, gloomy.

  3. I LOVE the Lemon Sorbet. Unfortunately my spouse has some kind of issue with yellow of any sort! Any color that even hints at yellow causes a dramatic reaction. (It's YELLOW! and he makes a face)
